An EKG is a type of heart test. This test tracks the electrical activity in your heart and can detect potential problems, including heart attacks, inflammation of the heart, angina, and other conditions. Generally, an EKG should only be given if you’re experiencing symptoms or have certain risk factors. Otherwise, you could have to undergo unnecessary tests or medical procedures.
Below is a list of some people who may benefit from receiving an EKG. If you’re not sure, consult with a medical professional. You may need an EKG if:
- You’ve suffered from a heart attack before
- You’re experiencing chest pain
- You have a family history of heart disease
- You have diabetes, are a smoker, are overweight, or have other risk factors
